Abstract：The German translation of Hung Lou Meng by Franz Kuhn is a successful case of translation variation.Dr.Kuhn analyzes and values the themes, artistic features, philosophical concepts and core values of Dream of the Red Chamber in the translation postscript.This article intends to explore Dr.Kuhn's efforts in correcting biases, breaking stereotype of China, discovering modern values of Dream of the Red Chamber and constructing multicultural perspectives.Furthermore, it analyzes the image of China constructed by Dr.Kuhn as a mirror for western culture through his translation of Hung Lou Meng, and discovers the effects and functions of the image on western culture's modern “self”.
