On Buddhism retribution in Jin Ping Mei Ci Hua

Abstract：Buddhism retribution had exerted a tremendous influence on the novel writing in Ming and Qing dynasties. However, influenced by the May Fourth New Culture Movement, many scholars in mainland China think that Buddhism retribution is negative and harmful for the novels in Ming and Qing dynasties. Its influence on Jin Ping Mei Ci Hua is manifested in the plot design, character portraying, character' s fate and character appraisal. This paper holds that Buddhism retribution on the whole exerts a positive influence on Jin Ping Mei Ci Hua. As an indispensable part of this novel, this thought should receive a more justified analysis and evaluation.
