Abstract：The thematic structures in English are discussed at the sentential and discoursal levels.The textual functions work in three aspects: the thematic structures provide the topic for the discourse;thematic structures provide different perspectives or the situational context for organizing and interpreting the discourse;thematic structures reflect the organization structure and type of the discourse.
