Abstract:In order to study the stability and reliability of the Brazilian splitting test of dry loess, the Brazilian splitting tests of undisturbed remolded Malan loesses for the aspects of splitting characteristic, load-deformation relationship, relations between tensile strength and dry density, and comparison of tensile strengths obtained from direct tensile test and Brazilian splitting test was carried out. The results showed that different failure patterns had different effects on the test results and the underestimated tensile strength was attributed to deviation of cracks away from diameter. After removing the results of obvious effect on tensile strength of unexpected failure patterns, the failure process was divided into three stages. With the dry density increasing, the load at damage point and peak gradually increased, while the corresponding vertical deformation increased first and then decreased. The tensile strength of the remodeled loess increases exponentially with dry density increasing. The results of Brazilian split tensile strength were lower than the direct tensile strength and there was a well linear correlation between them.
