摘要:威廉·萨默塞特·毛姆的小说《面纱》具有与传统历险小说的几分"形似""神似""神离"。"形似"表现在《面纱》承继了传统历险小说一贯的"荒岛囚禁"和"异国情调"之空间特质。同时,在"叙事图式"和"他者书写"等方面也与传统历险小说如出一辙,体现出它"神似"历险小说的一面。然而,《面纱》主人公独特的"别样历险"和焦虑的"男性气质"又使其与传统历险者"貌合神离",表现出它对传统历险小说的"神离"。《面纱》与历险小说的"形似""神似""神离"又使它成了通俗小说和文学经典完美结合的典范。

Abstract:The great British William Somerset Maugham was fascinated by traveling around the world and visiting east Asia, especially China, during his lifetime. His wanderlust in the east and great concern with western civilization, as well as interrogation of human nature, cast some light of adventure fiction on his masterpiece The Painted Veil, which shares some sort of similarity on surface and deep value with traditional British adventure fictions, with some differences from them at the same time. The similarity on the surface value lies in that The Painted Veil borrows “Waste Island Setting”and “Exotic Place Description”from traditional adventure fictions. Meanwhile, the novel shares some similarities on deep value with adventure fictions: they share the same narrating mode and third-person narrating. However, the protagonists' special adventure motive and their worrying masculinity show a sharp contrast with traditional adventurers, thus disclosing the deviation of The Painted Veil from adventure fictions as well as its superiority upon popular novels. Thanks to its similarity on surface and deep value with traditional adventure fictions, and deviation from them, The Painted Veil is hailed as a perfect combination of popular fiction and literature canon. The analysis of The Painted Veil from the perspective of adventure fictions is conductive to exploring deeply this controversial but glamorous labyrinth-like masterpiece.
