Abstract：Most of scholars believe that the tragic ending of Macbeth is attributed to his greedy for power. However, in term of René Girard's theory of “imitation desire”, there are many “the others”hidden behind Macbeth's desire, including Witches, Dunacan and his son, Lady Macbeth and Banquo. Those“the others”play an important role on the intimation and stimulation of Macbeth's ambition, and also make Macbeth driven by “the desire of imitation”all the time. Seemingly, Macbeth is a brutal monarch with regicide, but in terms of historiography, he is a tragic character suffering from persecution.
