The origin of Huo-Ji subarea of Jin Dialect in the northwest Henan

Abstract：As a relatively independent dialect area, the eighteen counties and cities in the northwest Henan are included in the Jin Dialect area. From a linguistic point of view, the dialect in this area is closer to Shanxi Dialect. The reasons for the formation of this dialect area are complicated, related to the unique geographical conditions and close economic and cultural exchanges with Shanxi. Immigration also plays a very important role in it. This paper aims to explore the reasons for the formation of Huo-Ji dialect subarea in northwest Henan from the perspective of historical geography, and it is hoped to solve the long-standing question of “Henan locals don't speak Henan Dialect”.
