Textual research on Zhang Xinzhi's Transcript of Miao Fuxuan's Comments on The Story of the Stone

Abstract：Zhang Xinzhi' s Transcript of Miao Fuxuan' s Comments on the Story of the Stone in the National Library (Wen Jin Lou) is a manuscript without proofreading. Through a detailed comparison between the transcript and the comments on the first sixteen chapters of Miao Fuxuan' s Comments on Embroidered Image of the Story of the Stone, which was recorded by Sun Tongsheng in the late Qing Dynasty, it was found that Sun Tongsheng made a great deal of increasing, deleting, and misplacing the comments by Zhang Xinzhi, and there was a serious distortion. There are three specific findings on this phenomenon: the discovery of the original version used in the transcript, the discovery of the author Cao Xueqin, and combing the evaluation techniques. These findings will help to restore the original comments by Zhang Xinzhi and provide a new material basis for future studies.
